Hello and welcome
I’m James

THE CURIOUS COUNSELLOR

If you have found your way to me, then you most likely have something on your mind or a problem that is troubling you.
Good on you for taking the first brave step towards looking into those concerns.

Mental Health….. what a tricky topic. I struggled with my mental health for 45 years before seeking help from someone I could trust.
Are you trying to find meaning in your life and in your self?
Have things not worked out in your life or have you always had some deeper sense of wonder why things are the way they are for you?
The hardest part for finding help, is finding someone you can trust and connect with.
It takes time to trust someone you don’t know. Especially with sharing those parts of yourself that are personal, vulnerable and sometimes scary.
Our connection and trust come way before what my qualifications are, because we are people. We are social emotional beings, that need trust between us, to allow those deeper emotions & thoughts to be expressed freely, without judgment.

From my experience in life and study, I have come to some basic elements of why we struggle mentally.
Traumatic experiences - Trauma is not what happened to you, it is what happened inside you, as a result of what happened to you. [Dr. Gabor Maté]. This is the emotional pain that stays with us.
Parents and our upbringing - We all need stable parents to get us through childhood. You come into the world with your own wants & needs. If our parents cannot or don’t know what we need and we are not allowed to express our emotions freely, safely & without judgement, we become emotionally troubled. We also can not be our authentic self, because we need to be as our parents want us to be (mostly for them), so that we feel safe and attached.
We need to please our parents so we don’t feel rejected, otherwise we will be alone. This sometimes means we try hard to get their attention. Now as an adult we continue this on. Trying to be good or better or people pleasing or comparing ourselves to others or busy with work or anxious to fit in.
Or we give up and become depressed, sad and alone, thinking that no one cares about us.
Each person has their own unique experience of growing up, which means that we need to get to know you and what it has been like for you.

This is all heavy stuff James, I hear you say, but what can we do?
Well, find someone you can trust and that also trusts and respects you. Opening up to a stranger is hard but the rewards can be life changing. Talking with a person that doesn’t know you, gives you the freedom and space to express your true thoughts and feelings.
And in return, I can give you a new perspective and awareness of yourself. Coming from my experience and knowledge, we can explore who you are and get to know your authentic self.
